Before the award, the USFWS presented the U.S. Caribbean Fish and Aquatic Conservation Initiative, and highlighted the first stream connectivity project in Puerto Rico via the removal of the Cambalache dam that was located in the  Río Grande de Arecibo at the municipality of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The NWRA was a key collaborator for the development of the Environmental Assessment required for this project. The removal of the low-head dam connected and restored 25 kilometers of riverine habitat to a more natural state, as well as provided fish and other aquatic species with a healthier, free-flowing stream, and boost recreational opportunities. Removal of the dam is expected to benefit migratory fish and crustaceans, including the Sirajo goby and the American eel that are considered Species of Greatest Conservation Need in the U.S. Caribbean.
