Become an Affiliate!

The Friends Affiliate Groups serves a powerful national network of Friends and individuals to fight for the needs of the Refuge System. The Friends Affiliate Program is a way for over 200 Friends groups to stand together as a force for the Refuge System. The Friends Affiliate Program:

  • Enhances communication among Friends groups in order to effectively inform and mobilize support for local and national refuge issues by becoming members of the Refuge Association’s Refuge Action Network (RAN).
  • Provides Friends the tools to build effective relationships with their local and national representatives.
  • Builds Refuge Friends Groups’ capacity as experienced and effective advocates for their organization, their refuge and the Refuge System through education, outreach and lobbying missions.

There is no charge to become an Affiliate Friends Group.

Why do we have an Affiliate Program?

The National Wildlife Refuge System is in crisis. Threats to refuges are growing, while staffing and funding for key conservation programs are diminishing. The Refuge Association has built a powerful national network of Friends and individuals to fight for the needs of the Refuge System and associated conservation programs. The Friends Affiliate Program is a way that Friends groups can stand together for the Refuge System, and embrace the broader principle that the strength of their local refuges is only as robust as that of the Refuge System.

Tools and Resources:

Refuge Action Network

Refuge Action Network (RAN) For your wildlife refuge to get the resources it needs, Congress needs to hear from you! RAN offers Friends an easy and convenient way to instantly communicate with lawmakers on conservation issues that impact local wildlife refuges and the Refuge System. RAN allows refuge advocates like you to make your voice heard on refuge issues. Become a member of the Refuge Action Network today! RAN subscribers also receive our monthly Flyer e-newsletter, which keeps you up-to-date on refuge issues on Capitol Hill and on Refuge Association activities.

Refuge Friends Connect is a website for Friends to: connect with each other, share experiences, and learn from each other by providing support and encouragement. helps Friends groups find inspiration, motivation, knowledge and skills to meet the challenges they face to support wildlife conservation, their community, the local refuge, and the Refuge System. On you’ll find resources to expand your knowledge; a directory of all Friends; a calendar to see and share upcoming grants, trainings, etc.; and news of what’s happening around the Refuge System — a place to do a bit of bragging. To access the directory and forums you will need to apply for membership.

Facebook Group: Friends Of NWRS (By Friends)

During the shutdown of 2013, friends created a Facebook group to help Friends connect, share, vent shutdown frustrations, and promote ways to advocate for the Refuge System. While the shutdown is over, the Facebook group lives on. It provides Friends with another site to discuss the management of their nonprofit organizations and legislative issues. To join the group login into Facebook and search for Friends of NWRs (By Friends), click Join Group in the top-right corner of the group’s page. A group administrator will respond to your request.
